DriverX - The "Uber" Movie
Skidding into middle-age, a stay-at-home Dad must drive to save his marriage & family. But wild L.A. nights present a new hazard.
ShareGrid member, Mark Stolaroff has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise finishing funds for his new micro-budget feature film, DriverX. Stolaroff made the film with the help of ShareGrid. The concept for DriverX is impressive. Stolaroff's regular filmmaking partner, award-winning writer/director Henry Barrial, had to resort to driving for Uber back in early 2015 to help pay the bills when a higher budget horror film the two were developing fell through. Right after, Stolaroff got a series of late night calls from Barrial describing the crazy things that were going on in his Prius each night. They soon realized there was an amazing story right in front of them, about a middle-aged married man who has to drive for Uber to support his family. And unlike the high budget horror film, this one could be made on the cheap like all their other films, (DriverX is their 5th feature together). Often Barrial would have to pull over right after dropping off a rider and jot down the things that person said--you just couldn’t make this stuff up!
While certainly the names and details have been changed to protect the “innocent,” the script for DriverX is filled with authentic dialogue and situations inspired by real life. DriverX captures with brutal authenticity what it’s like to be a part of this growing phenomenon, all the struggle, craziness and humor that comes with the “job” that’s not really a real job.
To self-finance the production of DriverX, Mark and his colleagues had to be resourceful. “We were on a tight budget and short turnaround time, so we thought ShareGrid would be the perfect option to create a high-quality feature film, but without breaking the bank! We loved it”, Mark exclaimed. You can get a sneak peek of their results by visiting the DriverX Kickstarter Page and watching their pitch video.
